What's On? Forthcoming activities of the Ball Clay Heritage Society 1. Walks Down the Templer Way As none of the walks is 'circular', it will be necessary to have shared vehicles at the start and finish of each walk to act as 'passenger ferries', so it will be essential for members to contact Geoff Hughes (Tel: 01626-355605; e-mail: gaphug@btinternet.co.uk) with their intentions and numbers of walkers by 31 August latest to discuss transport arangements. The walks will be led by Reg Proctor, a Society member. They are all moderately easy and are of a maximum length of about 4 miles. The use of stout footwear and suitable clothing is advised. Friends and relarives are welcome. PLEASE NOTE NEW DATES FOR WALKS 2 & 3 1. Sunday 9th September 10.30 start: Haytor to Edgemoor Hotel, Bovey Tracey The walk will start at Haytor Rocks, to take in the disused quarries to the north of Haytor, then we will follow the Granite Tramway to pick up the Templer Way, passing through the Yarner Wood Nature Reserve and finishing at the Edgemoor Hotel on the outskirts of Bovey Tracey. 2. Sunday 30th (change from 23rd) September 10.30 start: Edgemoor Hotel to Stover Country Park The walk will start at the Edgemoor Hotel and will follow the Templer Way via Brimley and the Great Plantation, finishing at the Stover Country Park . 3. Sunday 14th (change from 7th) October 10.30 start: Stover Country Park to Jetty Marsh, Newton Abbot. The walk will start at Stover Country Park, and will follow the Templer Way, joining the Stover Canal and terminating at the Jetty Marsh Nature Reserve near B & Q.
2. Talk on Properties & Uses of Lignite John Fiske, a Society member, will give a talk on the properties and uses of lignite, a mineral associated with the South Devon ball clay deposits, on Thursday 22nd November in Kingsteignton Community Hall, commencing at 7.30pm.
